Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre

The Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre is a not for profit organization. All people are welcome here, whether they are Aboriginal, M?tis, Non-status, or any other race, culture, and sex.

The staff is friendly and welcoming, and ready to answer questions and steer you in the right direction to get the correct answers. We have many community connections with other agencies and if we cannot help you then we will find someone who will.


History
========================================================
The Katarokwi Native Friendship Centre was established in 1992 and is a member of the National Federation of Friendship Centres (NAFC) and the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres (OFIFC). It is committed to bringing positive changes to the daily lives of the Aboriginal community in the Kingston and surrounding rural areas.

The centre offers various programs and many additional services such as emergency relief for clients with financial problems (i.e. diapers, formula, milk, other supplies, some financial and transportation assistance as well).


Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Program

To promote healing and wellness for Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people in the greater Kingston area. To work within a holistic framework - to consider the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the individual and family structure. To support and nurture quality of life.

Services

- Coordination of healing circles and other
traditional healing methods
- Individual and group counselling
- Promotion of awareness issues around: family
violence, drug and alcohol abuse, life skills,
among others
- Native Awareness Workshops


Aboriginal Healthy Babies

To ensure that all Aboriginal families and their children (prenatal to age 6 years) who are at risk of physical, mental, emotional and social problems have access to effective, consistent early intervention services.

- Home Visiting: to provide home support and
assist families, act as a liason and advocate.
- Service Coordination: linking families to
agencies and resources for additional support
and service.
- Traditional Teachings related to roles &
responsibilities as a parent, - children
are a sacred gift and precious resource.

Aboriginal Prenatal Program

To provide culturally appropriate programming to help women have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. To help individuals to understand the risk factors. To increase awareness and knowledge of native traditions during pregnancy and after birth.

AKWE: GO PROGRAM

To provide urban Aboriginal children with the support, tools and healthy activities which will build and foster their inherent ability to make healthy choices. Designed to improve the life of urban Aboriginal children through the delivery of culturally appropriate programmes and services.

Life Long Care Program

Mother Earth Play Group

An Ontario Early Years Program to offer support and resources specific to the Aboriginal community, to parents/caregivers of Aboriginal children ages 0 to 6 years, in a playgroup setting. Program is offered ? day per week.




Aboriginal Youth Program
========================================================
To provide services for youth aged 15 to 24 years of age in an Aboriginal setting to promote enhancement of their economic, social, and personal prospects. Youth will be involved in activities focusing on respect, awareness and support for preservation of Aboriginal cultures and values.
